What's "D" Mean

Hello everybody
I have a picture of a shot down He 111 on a beach near Bordeaux in june 1940.
The only visible thing is a white "D" on the top of the tail.
Can anyone could tell me what it means ?

Thanks a lot !!

Best

Matt

Re: What's "D" Mean

D is ac's individual letter. The photo was taken in Aug 40 and is of a well known crash from 1/KGr 100 so in this case 6N+DH

Re: What's "D" Mean

Or might it be 6N+DL which came down in shallow water at Les Sables d'Olonne?

Re: What's "D" Mean

Excellent photo which I don't think puts a yellow D right out of the question (but it doesn't confirm it either). Does someone know of a 6N+DH lost in the relevant area and period? I have Ken Wakefield's book Pfadfinder and there is no DH his appendix on 1./KGr. 100 losses but there are many entries without a code or Werk Nummer, so that isn't conclusive.

Another thought: the fuselage appears to be half-filled with sand. I wonder how long that takes after a landing in shallow water? It might suggest that the photo wasn't taken right after the crash.

Nick

I have another 5 photos of this crash. Loads of confusion about this loss said to be Hourtin 14-15 Aug 40

Re: What's "D" Mean

HI Chris
It's exactly my plane. A pic comes from Bordeaux Archives said "Between Soulac and Montalivet". This mean the top of the Verdon.
I hoped that it could be the Heinkel 111 of 9./KG1 shot down here the june 20th... but no...

Thanks a lot for your answers !!

Best

Matt
