Re: Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1

Hi, all

The Seetransportfliegerstaffel 1 was destined for Norway after being commanded away from the command of Luftwaffenkommando Südost between 10th and 20th October 1944.

The unit is listed as being "In Verlegung nach Norwegen" in the strength return of October 20th 1944 and October 31st 1944.

By November 10th 1944 the situation has obviously changed, possibly by the exit from Finnland, and the unit is now listed as being refitting in Dievenow ("Auffrischung Dievenow"), first under direct command of Gen.d.Transp.Flieger - later under Luftflotte 10.

This is also the situation until January 10th 1945, the report ing date for which the last document available to me of this category is dated.

Regards,
Andreas B

Re: Lufttransportgruppe (See) 1

According to RL2, the strength return for 20.12.43 (the only day for which I have notes) was:

- 1 Staffel: 5 a/c serviceable, 3 u/s and 8 crews ready, 3 conditionally ready and 1 unready
- 2 Staffel: 6 a/c serviceable, 3 u/s and 6 crews ready, 1 conditionally ready and 5 unready
- 3 Staffel: 9 a/c serviceable, 3 u/s and 12 crews ready.

All units were equipped with the Ju52. The 1 Staffel had an extra 2 Ju34 See that were serviceable along with two crews that were able to fly them.

The document refers to the unit as: See-Transp.-St. and there are no details provided for a Stab unit in terms of strength return.

Formed February 1943 at Travemünde and equipped with Ju 52/3m Wasser floatplane transports. Almost immediately after formation the Staffel transferred to the Black Sea, and then in April 1943 moved to the Aegean.

9 Oct 44: Staffel recorded 2 losses between 20 Sep and 9 Oct - one of these failed to return from a mission and the other was totaled in a landing accident at Athens-Phaleron.
10 Oct 44: Ju 52 floatplane (RG+TS), which had been borrowed from See-Transportstaffel 3, crashed into the sea 100 km N of Crete after all 3 engines quit, 100%, 1 MIA and 3 rescued. According to the rescued survivors, the Staffel had been reduced to just 5 Ju 52s and 6 crews by this point in time.
15 Oct 44: departed Greece on or about this date and transferred to Pütnitz on the Baltic coast, although there may have been some intermediate stops along the way.
Feb 45: at Pütnitz with 15 Ju 52 floatplanes - renamed 3./TG 1 at the end of February.
