About "Black 3" at Halle

"601090" or "601095", black or blue (Or maybe even some other colour?!)

I certainly don't see how the last digit could be '0'. PS Smart Sharpen used.

But what about the tactical markings?

JaPo's book mentions that the markings couldn't have been blue (Or any other colour), because 8./JG 6 outlined their markings in blue, although some points remain:

- Since this is a replacement/remarked bird, there isn't any guarantee that there was any time or interest to outline the markings (This is of course contrasted by "211094" 'Blue 2' that also seems to have been remarked, but outlined in white, but shape being barely distinguishable).

- 8./JG 6 planes seem to have had their markings done very precisely, while '3' here looks like priority was more or less being discernible (But again, definitely not any guarantee).

Quote from FalkeEins blog below: (E: I just want to point out that to my knowledge, this is not confirmed information!)

..annotation on the rear of Jim Crow's original vet photo says 'blue 3'
Any thoughts?

Re: About "Black 3" at Halle

I think you may very well be right about this!

I have always been suspicious when everybody says that the markings for a certain plane are 'black' but the markings don't look 'black'.
Like Fw 190D-9, Blue 12 + -, 8. /JG 6 that everybody said earlier was Black 12, even though many photos showed a lighter than black colour for the #12 and the bar.
I think it’s very likely that this plane could have changed Staffel and the painting wasn’t completed or done correctly.

This is the best try to see the W.Nr. and I’m agreeing there too, 601095 looks totally convincing.

"500570" was definitely considered to be black earlier.

Comparing different greys in B&W photos has its own problems, as not all films and development are equal (Orthochromatic film etc.), but black being very consistent.

And "Black 3" does appear very convincingly black in most of the photographs.

There is no question that this is black 3, just like black 8 a 6. Staffel a/c. The werknummer, well 601090 was indicated by the seller of that Ebay picture. Would like to know who bought the original....

Re: About "Black 3" at Halle

Orthochromatic film had pretty much disappeared by 1945 on both the Western Allies and Axis sides.

I can still see a thin dark boarder so I still question it being Schwarze 3.... I believe this image shows that it is not Schwarze 3

To be honest, black is more believeable in my opinion as well, but werknummer ending in '0', no.

Hello;
John is right, this is "Back 3" and the Werk Nummer is 601090. Attached is an enlargement from one of our photos that was published in Vol. 1 of our Dora book. The '0' is clearly evident as can be seen. Click on the image to enlarge it.
Cheers Jerry

Thanks for responding.

That most definitely is a '0', but from the starboard picture, I just can't see the last digit being the same.

Especially comparing to the other zeros in the serial number, odd.

Possibly mismarked?

Come on guys there is a dark boarder, look at the images ..... what could be darker than black unless the interior colour was lighter, therefore I suggest red, Red 3 with a black border.

I don't really see it, even if it were there, it seems a bit too thin for an outlined marking.

That dark spot on the top of '3' is the panel seam, even all of the other photos I have access to indicate a single colour.
