Re: Unkown WDAF Hurricane

Hello,

For P/O F.A. Scott, Try MAW1/422 (Sunday, 4 January 1942).

Alex, The 30 Squadron "F.A. Scott" was RCAF, not RAFVR.

Re: Unkown WDAF Hurricane

Hello,

l never mentioned Hurricane I Z4418!

The following reference does:

Appendix 3: Roll of Honour.

SCOTT, Plt. Off. Frederick Arthur (J5225)
+ 4th January 1942.
Missing in action in Hurricane Z4418
(Buried at sea by Royal Navy).

See:
Flat Out The Story of 30 Squadron Royal Air Force.
Hamlin,John F.
Tunbridge Wells:Air Britian(Historians) Ltd.,2002.
pp.156 & 290.

Re: Unkown WDAF Hurricane

All

The book is a bit odd when it comes to Z4418

The serial number is not mentioned on p.156 but only on p.290.
However in appendix G (listing the known aircraft supplied to No 30 Sq), Z4418 is not mentioned, but Z4419 is! Since Z4419 is 100% confirmed as being supplied to the unit in question, it might be a misprint in the book by Hamlin. It may or may not be so, since the SOC date for Z4419 is very late and as such does not feel good either.

I talked to Geoff Negus who has studied in depth the death of Commonwealth airment during the war and he stated there is no primary source known by him connecting Z4418 to F.A. Scott

Neither does there seem to be any SAAF records claiming Z4418 was on loan to any other unit.

As it stands at this point, I am still very hesitant about the exact aircraft Scott flew on his last mission and I would not take Z4418 for granted!

Cheers
Stig

Re: Unkown WDAF Hurricane

Hello,

I'm a fellow Air-Britain member. I could have chased it up myself, but appreciate you doing so.

You asked for a source to the connection between Z4418, and P/O Scott, I provided one. I did not endorse John Hamlin's mention of Z4418, simply offered it as a possibility.

Thanks,

Col.

Re: Unkown WDAF Hurricane

Col

I am not pointing any fingers
Its very simply I am interested in the aircraft of the NA campaign.

For your info Z4418 is in fact on again. Winston Brent came back and said his information regarding the aircraft had been taken from the Air Britain serial book. He has not found any details as such about Z4418 being in use by the 1 SAAF Sq in South African records....

It means I have upgraded Z4418 to be a probable again.
Jeeez, that aircraft more and more resembles a roller coaster.....

Cheers
Stig
