12th November 1943:-
Nowotny Jak-9 at 1005 hrs (nr.255)
Schnörrer Jak-9 at 1008 hrs (nr.34)

Johannes:

On 12 November 1943, Luftflotte 6 dispatched all available aircraft, a total of 215 sorties, despite the poor weather conditions, to the Nevel area. The Russians had broken through and were heavily supporting the advance with ground-attack aircraft. This was to be Walter Nowotny's last combat mission on the Eastern front, and Schnörrer flew as his wingman. Nowotny attacked a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft and shot it down for his 255th victory. A second Il-2 attacked Nowotny’s Fw 190 but Schnörrer managed to bring down this Il-2 for his 35th, and last, victory with JG 54. Schnörrer’s Fw 190 A-5 (W.Nr. 410 021) then received hits from another Il-2. He baled out of his blazing Fw 190 at an altitude of no more than 50 to 70 meters. The parachute deployed only a few meters above the ground. German soldiers rescued the badly injured pilot, who had suffered broken legs and a skull fracture.
So many questions.
1. Type of victims:
#255 12.11.43 10:05 Yak‑9 3 km S. Spavessno-Sees: at 800 m Stab I./JG54
#35 12.11.43 10:08 Yak‑9 Orviso-Tua: 800 m Stab I./JG54

Both Yaks? Or Both Il-2s?

2. Location: Spavessno-Sees/Sanessno-See? Orviso-Tua? Where is it? Newel area?

Nick, its true about Stotz and that's all I have for now on the subject. I read some where that Hans Hahn before he went down on the 21 Feb 1943 made a last broadcast over the radio something like "Poppa got spanked" but can't recall the book or location that it was made. There was a book about Hans Hahn done by Eagle Editions Lted some years ago which I'm interested in any of the narrative portions of his time with II./JG 54 if possible.

Re: Nowotny's last easternfront victory march 44?

Hi Michael, as you know my preference is to substantiate or refute German pilots' victory claims by comparing them to enemy sources whether primary or secondary in order to find the truth. Anything falling short of that is on the level of idle speculation or even outright slander (...we are talking real people here who cannot defend their own reputations...)

As far as I am concerned the question still stands and it is up to Johannes "the source" to prove his case. Can he even say as little as "3 out of 10 of his claims stand up to scrutiny, 7 of them don't." ...That would give nothing away in so far as a book manuscript or other profitable research would be concerned. If he can't even do that, well then.... In the fire brigade and airforce that I served in, he'd be known as a particular kind of artist. That's the ball in his court, Michael.

As for the Eagle Editions "Assi" Hahn book, I have it in my collection. Email me off-board if I can be assistance on that front.

Nick

In fact, it it lake Ssawereshje/Zaverezhje (Озеро Завережье).

There indeed was an air combat against soviet fighters on that day and time. And, as usual, results were not as Nowi reported
