Colors of I./JG 1 insigna on He 162

Hello,
Some years ago appeared elsewhere on the web (I've lost the link) a color photograph of Oblt Demuth's logbook showing insigna of I./JG 1 "the devil in clouds". The sky was orange instead of being blue...
Can anybody tell more ?
Thank you for replies.

Re: Colors of I./JG 1 insigna on He 162

According to the latest research, more precisely by Peter Rodeike, who wrote an article entitled "Der Teufel über den Wolken?", which was published in Jet&Prop 1/2012, pages 25-29, also supported by the contemporary drawing created by one of the then IV./JG 1 tehnicians, Ogefr. Lammers, the emblem background colour was yellow, which was interpreted as reflection of the Hell’s fire, while the cloud-like design was interpreted as the vapour of Hell.

The same article quoted the former IV./JG 1 pilot, Eberhard Burath, who once stated talking about the Gruppe emblem motif "Die Feinde soll der Teufel holen" [the enemies should be grabbed by the Devil].

Hi Mermet,

here are two additional links, that also suggest the background was yellow:

Re: Colors of I./JG 1 insigna on He 162

Apart from the aforementioned interpretation (i.e., the Hell's fire and vapour of Hell) of the emblem's motif, which would explain the usage of yellow colour for the emblem background, there is also a PK Kriegsberichter's note dated 13 December 1939, made during or after his visit to then 2./JGr 101, where it was written simply "Der Teufel aus den Wolken!".

For the latter, one would expect the background colour to be a sky (i.e., light) blue, as originally presented by Karl Ries in his groundbreaking work from the early 1960's.

Whether there indeed was a variant of the emblem with the blue background, which was then at a certain point in time changed to yellow, is hard to tell.

Hope that the above helps.
