Attack at RR Staion Lindwedel Lower Saxonia 15.10.1944
Hello,
I searching for more detail about this attack. (Unit, Combat Report etc) It looks like that P-47 bombed and strafed this RR and during this an train with ammunition maybe Torpedos for the Kriegsmarine blow up. Heavy losses at passengers from nearby trains. Bests, h. |

Re: Attack at RR Staion Lindwedel Lower Saxonia 15.10.1944
The 78th FG flew a "Rhubarb" on the 15th operating from Hanover to the north. They lost one plane 42-28544 (83rd FS) flown by Jack LaGrange in the Heber / Soltau area. MACR 9499 is here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/91073868
Note the MACR describes they were on a Rhubarb misssion and had "made a pass on a train in the Hanover area about 9:50". There were probably other groups on the Rhubarb, but the 78th is one possibility. (The attack on Lindwedel was apparently at about 9:00 - German time). Quote:
A look into the reports of 9th Air Force that 15th October 1944 didn't find any solution. All fighter-bomber missions took place in the Rhineland or South of it. No Mission of the bomber force of 9th AF that day due to bad weather. A RHUBARB mission of 8th AF fighters could be possible, but is not mentioned in the book "The Mighty Eight War Diary". RSwank's remarks are interesting, but the 78th Fighter Group's mission that day led the Group to Bohmte airfield (near Osnabrück), where their duty was to attack the cover-fighters of jet-fighter Take-offs and landings. The description of the time-over-target of the 78th Group is about 09:00 hrs. Under those circumstances, you probably may find more information by the ORB of 2nd TAF or RHUBARBS of 8th AF that day.
