Re: Photo Sopwith
Nice shot
Must have been just after its landing behind enemy lines 23 March 1918 after being hit in combat east of Peronne. First Dolphin combat loss Pilot 2/Lt Clarke made POW. The aircraft itself deteriorated quickly since other photos show the Germans quickly took care of the rubber from the wheels and dismantled it. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Sopwith
Hi Clint. Non-standard but not unusual (SOP250 had a few similar), the early schemes were simpler than the later 4/5 colour probably just green / light or dark brown patches on the unpainted fabric. Looks like 3-colour.
On the subject of identification these colour Escadrille emblems may be of help in the future..... https://www.traditions-air.fr/unit/photo/classeurvi.htm Nick |

Re: Photo Sopwith
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the reply. Yes the site you link to is very useful for unit markings and is usually my first call. It's a great starting point but only has one unit emblem per unit so doesn't pick up on units with changing emblems eg SOP 214 a couple of posts down in this thread or perhaps the Nieuport on the French Photo Album thread. Still life would be much harder wothout the work the site owner has done.Hat tip ![]() Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Sopwith
Hello,
Perhaps not as visually impressive as No.4255 in the previous post of this thread, but I don't believe that I've seen this variant before, Sopwith 1D2 No.4180. https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...160372849.html Regards, Clint Last edited by musec04; 4th December 2024 at 17:00. |
