"Bud" Anderson's 7th kill
Hello everyone. I have a question concerning Col. Clarence "Bud" Anderson, a triple ace of 357th FG, 8th AF. Anyone who read his memoirs "To Fly And Fight" surely remembers the 1st chapter about his tough dogfight with a Bf 109. The story is here:
http://www.cebudanderson.com/ch1.htm Anderson wrote: "I suppose I could go look it up in the archives. There's the chance I could find him in some gruppe's log book, having flown on this particular day, in this particular place, a few miles northwest of the French town of Strasbourg that sits on the Rhine. There are fellows who've done that, gone back and looked up their opponents. I never have. I never saw any point. He was someone who was trying to kill me, is all" My question is: Did anyone try to establish who his opponent might have been? Judging from Anderson's account, he must have been a damn good flier and there weren't that many of them left in the Luftwaffe in mid-1944, perhaps a Staffelkapitaen or a Gruppenkommandeur? |

Re: "Bud" Anderson's 7th kill
IIRC, Luftwaffe ME109 gruppen engaged were II/JG27, II/JG53, III/JG3 and I/JG5. From an earlier post on this subject...
"II/JG53 lost 4 ME109s. II/JG27 lost 6. They intercepted a box of B17s and their P51 escort "southeast of Nancy". I/JG5 reported it lost 7 pilots (not clear if KIA or WIA nor how many a/c). III/JG3 lost 7 a/c and 3 pilots KIA. One of the KIA pilots had recorded 13 victories (Obfhr Robert Meyer-Arend). He crashed near Gerardmer. Prien's unit history described the action as occuring around Colmar-Gerardmer area." |

Re: "Bud" Anderson's 7th kill
Not aware of a site with this information. Jochen Prien's histories of JG3 and JG53 were my sources. Tony Wood's records indicate victory claims by German JG's, giving some indication of the units that engaged the 8thAF.
