Question Bf109 - Anzio ? - ID pilot

Somewhere in Anzio ?
A German Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter shot down in the Anzio bridgehead, 25 January 1944.

Re: Bf109 - Anzio ? - ID pilot

It seems to be a I. Gruppe aircraft (no marking is visible aft of the cross) and the "6" appears yellow (3. Staffel). On the Anzio front at this period, as far as I remember, I./JG 4 was the only I. Gruppe equipped with the Bf 109. (I./JG 53 and I./JG 77 were defending the North of Italy; 3./NAGr. 11 was not formed until February and received its first aircraft in March.)

I./JG 4 did report an aircraft missing in action on 24 January 1944 and 4 shot down in air combat on 22 January. (Bundesarchiv RL 2-III/852)

When you enlarge the photo you can see another Bf-109's wing and tail in the background along with a DB-605.

From Falcon's page.
Dienstgrad, Pilot: unbekannt, unbekannt
Geschwader: Jagdgeschwader 53
Gruppe: I. Gruppe
Staffel: 3. Staffel
Nationalität: Deutschland
Kennung: gelbe 6
Stammkennzeichen: TI+YY
Werknummer: 26 037
Standort: San Lorenzo (Italien)
Aufnahmedatum: 25.01.1944
Zusatzinfos:

The other aircraft could be the one from the neighbouring photo.

Re: Bf109 - Anzio ? - ID pilot

Bf 109 G-6 W.Nr. 26 037 "Gelbe 6", 3./JG 53, San Lorenzo. Located 40 km SSE of Rome and 13,5 km NW of Anzio, this airstrip hosted I./JG 53 for a very short time between 17 and 21 September 1943.

As stated by Revi 16, in the background is the wingtip of Bf 109 G-6 W.Nr. 26 125 "Schwarzer Winkel", Stab I./JG 53, taken by Sgt. Menzies in this other IWM photo here: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/i...ject/205525900

Cheers
Marc
