I suggest a bit of balance. Name authors will not lose their name recognition. Publishers also have name recognition. As a working book editor, I know publishers review everything coming in. Submissions have to be checked.

For some, the internet has taught them to think quickly and to act quickly. That should end immediately. Perhaps a list of "author" names should be posted here to assist others. And "publisher" names, if any. Something that has its own topic name and that can be added to as required.

We cannot take on the passive victim role here. Not at all.

I propose to introduce a scoring model, labeling books by their AI-use and/or AI-content. It would be something like energy labeling, scoring from A,B,C,D,E to ....

For instance:

A - Strictly no AI used
B - AI only used for text editing
C - AI used for content checking
D - AI used as source for content (text and imaging)
E - Fully AI-generated book

I do wonder if the publishing industry would be open for such a suggestion and if it would be feasable...

This is being discussed by the publishing industry. For some, authors and artists must disclose AI use in any form. For others, no AI use will be allowed, even if minimal.

The simpler question must be asked. How will this affect the average buyer of books? He is not interested in a label, just something he can take home as always. He is unlikely to belong to a specialist group. And after losing money to some cheap, AI generated bit of nonsense, he will not know what to do.

From my point of you, a list of fake AI authors and related artists (if credited), and publisher names, if any.

Good to hear that this issue has been addressed!

However, I am of the opinion that a "list of fake AI authors and related artists (if mentioned), and publisher names (if present)" would create the need for a place where this list is published and maintained.

I think it would be much easier if a buyer could assess the quality of a book based on a rating label on the cover or by viewing the book's rating label online, to help make an informed choice. This establishes a direct link between the book and the rating label and requires no further action (such as consulting a list).

Anyone seriously interested in history, for example, is interested in the results of thorough research and original images. So likely, only books labelled with an A (B?) rating will be interesting, and books labeled with a lower rating will sell less, hopefully making production less profitable and help solve/lessen this AI-problem.

I think any serious publisher would support a visible labeling system to indicate that they offer books of contractually guaranteed quality and have confidence in their authors.

Perhaps the indication of the rating could be added to the ISBN, enabling unambiguous (and more controlled?) registration?
