Loss of Vickers Wellington B Mk. X LN808 during night of July 21./22., 1944
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
can anyone provide details about the loss of Vickers Armstrong Wellington B Mk. X LN808 B flown by the crew of Pilot F/O Edward Hawkes Hepburn GALLOWAY, RAFVR 159395 during night operations against Fanto Oil Refinery during the night of July 21./22., 1944? Although this aircraft crashed almost certainly over Austrian territory, none of the perished crew (5) is buried at the british war cemetery in Klagenfurt, Austria. I am sure that these airman are accounted for but somehow they went missing afterwards. Does anyone know which unit carried out exhumations in Austria after the war and where records and documents about their activities would be stored today? Here are some older requests about the raid of July 21./22., 1944 and the loss of LN808: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=4156 https://forum.rafcommands.com/forum/...lan#post263491 Any help is highly appreciated! Many thanks in advance. Regards, K. |

File ME 1686 sounds promising indeed, although not readily found online.
Location given as (nr) Pernitz. See https://catalog.archives.gov/id/91176981 Also see https://catalog.archives.gov/id/207181770?objectPage=65 in which it is stated that no air crashes took place there, but not sure if only US air losses are meant. Whole document may be of interest for you... Leendert |

The casualty report for LN808 at The National Archives at Kew, London would solve this mystery. Does anyone have access to this report? Cheers, K.
