JG1 1943

Fw Erwin Roden and Uffz Gunther Hassenfuss of III/JG1 were killed in combat with 118 Squadron on 18 July 1943. Can anyone tell me what aircraft they were flying? I know they were Bf109s but "Friedrichs" or "Gustavs".

I am also looking for a loss to JG1 on 2 August 1943, again in combat with 118 Sqn?

Re: JG1 1943

Uffz. Günther Hasenfuß, 7./JG 1, KIA 20 km W Den Helder, Bf 109 G-6, 20 085 (WNF), "white 2", 100%

Fw. Erwin Roden, 7./JG 1 KIA 20 km W Den Helder, Bf 109 G-6, 19 853 (WNF), "white 8", 100%

Both are buried on the Ysselsteyn War Cemetary, NL

There are no established losses of JG 1 for 2 August 1943.

Regards, Heuser

Re: JG1 1943

Thanks Heuser, I am trying to trace the victories of FL John B Shepherd who claimed on these dates. As far as I can understand no Bf109G was lost on 2/8/1943 and so his "probable" looks shaky.

Re: JG1 1943

Keith, to be accurate several 109Gs were lost or damaged in France and western Germany/low countries on this date, but none to enemy action.

Re: JG1 1943

Hi John,

All accidents on that date? For some reason I have noted "III/JG1" as a possible solution but I can't remember why! I believe JG3 could also have been in combat on that date but can't find a list of their losses.

Hello all,

This was not probably JG 1 but III./JG 54 -

Uffz Obst 9./JG 54 shot down over Northsea - KIA
Uffz Sabrina 9./JG 54 shot down near Texel - WIA

all in combat with Spitfires - also RCAF Spit units were involved.

Best wishes
Rob

Re: JG1 1943

Hi.

No, not all accidents on August 2nd, but the locations and all information available are vital when researching these losses. The losses for III./J.G.54 are listed as follows:

http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=113537

http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=106946

The fighter units of the Luftwaffe (including Ergänzungsjagdgruppen Ost, Süd and West) reported a total of 27 losses in all for this date. Of these, 10 are listed as being due to enemy action.

In your original question you asked for losses of J.G.1 on this date, and there were none.

Best regards,
Andreas

Re: JG1 1943

Thanks Rob and Andreas. Still can't work out how I arrived at JG1. The victory was claimed over Den Helder around 1130.

Re: JG1 1943

Hi

The right name was Fw. Werner Sadrina, he was woundet in the brown 6. Uffz. Obst was killed with the brown 9, he was washed ashore at Nordstrand on the 10. August 1943.

Re: JG1 1943

Hello all,

There are some more details:

Fw Werner Sadrina, 9./JG 54, "Insel Texel" "Durch Bordwaffenbeschuß Treffer in der Kabine" - slightly wounded; sorry about mis-spelling his surname. It is Sadrina.

Uffz Gotthard Walter Obst, 9./JG 54, Northsea Planquadrat DK5, "Luftkampf mit ca. 15 Spitfire. 1 Fallschirmabsprung über Wasser wurde beobachtet. Eingesetzte Suchaktionen bisher ohne Erfolg." Washed ashore on 10.08.43 at northbeach of Borkum - buried at Luth. Friedhof Borkum (grave number 593).

W/C Chadburn (Digby Wing) also claimed a 1/3 Me 109 at 2-3 miles off Texel; G W Northcott of 402 Sqdn claimed 2 Me 109's off Texel; J B Shepherd claimed a Me 109G on 2 Aug 43 as probable off Den Helder.

regards
Rob
