DB605A-1 and DB605A-1 TP ???

I was curious what the difference is. I cannot figure out the "TP", and no reference material or specs describes the "TP" part of it...

Thoughts?

Thanks!

As far as I am aware, you're correct in saying that the letters TP never referred to an engine but to the a/c. Just out of curiosity, what reference referred to the TP on the engine?

All the best,
George

Re: DB605A-1 and DB605A-1 TP ???

Hi George!

I have a main DB605 data tag. it reads: DB605 A-1 TP.

When I do google a search for it, I find this info on an Me109...

"A few years ago a group of Polish aviation enthusiasts did find wreck of Bf-109 into Trzebun lake in Poland. It was completely wreck, whaich was rebuilt in Aviation Museum in Krakow and repainted into orginal markings.

Was built 11 may 1944 into Messerschmitt Werke at Regensburgu. Messerschmitt Bf 109 G6 no 163306 with Daimler-Benz DB 605 A-1 TP engine. Was joined to Jagdgruppe West, whoch was moved fromFrance to Kalisz Pomorski . Aircraft had side no 3 and radio code RQ + DS.

During 28 may 1944 RQ+DS was piloted by so young 24-year old pilot sgt. Ernst Pleines. During flight pilot detected a damage and tried to make a force landing. Finally crashed into Trzebun lake. Wreck was found 55 years later...

RQ+DS was rebuilt in using 80% of orginal parts and was marked by Messershmitt Associacion as the best and most realistic Me-109 rebuilt of the world."

So that is where my confusion lies...

Well, it certainly would not be the first time that a caption was wrong. I have never heard of a DB 605A-1 TP. As far as I know the a/c that was built for tropical or wasteland service, was just a normal 109, with a normal DB 605 engine; with tropical equipment, like a sand filter, a special survival kit with rifle, extra covering on moving parts, etc. added, and then was designated as a tropical a/c.

Re: DB605A-1 and DB605A-1 TP ???

Here's some information that I received from Daimler several years ago (09-10-2000).

In the one paragraph it mentions a "605 T-Motor". It shows a chart with the different model DB-605's.
Interestingly enough there were DB 601T, DB 601P, DB 603T & DB 603P, but no "TP". My German is lousy, I haven't tried to translate it.

This info is from "Flugmotor und Strahltriebwerke" by Kyrill von Gersdorff, Kurt Grasmann, Bernard & Graefe Verlag Munchen.

The contact at that time was,

Re: DB605A-1 and DB605A-1 TP ???

I cannot shed any direct light on the meaning of the appellation “TP.” I can however, offer the following from my DB 605 database file:

I have 16 references to DB 605’s with “Tp” in the type description.

7x DBB 605 A-1/Tp All from within the WNr. 010 XXXXX to 011 XXXXX ranges
1x DB 605 AM/Tp WNr. 011 04968
6x DB 605 D-1/Tp All from within the WNr. 011 XXXXXX series
2x DB 605 M/Tp WNrn. 011 100935 and 011 101156

Thee majority of these entries were gleaned from CEA (Crashed Enemy Aircraft) reports.

Re: DB605A-1 and DB605A-1 TP ???

I am wondering about two possible explanations for the mysterious abbrevation 'TP'... one is being it stands for a 'trop'(ical) version, the other possibility I can think of it's a code for the manufacturer of the engine..

Were any German manufacturers of the DB 605 engine under license and having the manufacturer's code 'TP' ...?

Re: DB605A-1 and DB605A-1 TP ???

Hi!

there is a sperate section on the data plate where the manufactures 3-digit code is...and with my experience with data plates, there would have only been a model in the upper section with no reference to manufacture...

interesting...
