Re: Luftwaffe Ju88 Lost on 8th March 1940

I just checked my loss-list it's quoted I.KG30, so no doubt about the 2.staffel, I will be happy by the way to see the NVM, for that date is a quite rare bird

Hi Chris.

There are no records in Denmark to support that they ende up here. We do have a list of all Luftwaffemembers interned until 09.04.40, and they are not in it.

I now know where the confusion is coming from. On 16 Mar 40, a Ju 88 of
3/KG 30 became lost returning from attack on Scapa Flow and crash-landed at Coebelen, Laaland, Denmark. Uffz Werner Mattner + 3 interned. Do you have a note of this incident and who the '+ 3' were

Junker: Any chance of a scan as WASt could not find this one when I asked for copies (KG 30 is incomplete as you know)

Re: Luftwaffe Ju88 Lost on 8th March 1940

Hehe, interesting comment on this NVM for those interested in the politics surrounding the 'phony war':

A note is attached saying: 'Die Besatzung hat angegeben, sie habe sich auf einer Übungsflug befunden. Ihre baldige Freilassung steht daher in Aussicht.'

Thus - the crew did not mention that they really were on a bombing mission against Scapa Flow, and made a navigational error on the return flight.

Do you know if and when they were released, Jørn?

Additional: I guess they were... across the entire document is written 'Zurück' in large handwritten letters.... hehehehehehehe

Regards,
Andreas B

They were released with other interned aircrews on the 9. april 1940 as Denmark was occupied by Germany.

OK, just curious to know if they were released before that date.

Re: Luftwaffe Ju88 Lost on 8th March 1940

Hi Gerry & All,

On going through the list of Luftwaffe aircraft in `Sky Over Scapa` by Gregor Lamb, I note that a Ju-88 (Identity not given) of 2/KG30 was shot down by F/O Dutton of 111 Sq, RAF Wick, and location given as 40 miles east of Orkney on on 8/3/40. Don`t know if this helps or hinders, as your post was so long ago you may have answers already?

Regards
Dave.
