What was the range of the West bomb thrower?

It seems that its range was a maximum of a paltry 240 yards that decreased as the springs weakened. I wonder if it's sole advantage of silence would have applications in such a weapon today?

Would this machine produce less noise than a standard mortar?
Some kind of electro magnetic device perhaps, but spring loaded... They probably made the right choice in 1917
