Spitfire Mk IX PT543, 185 Sqdn, shot down in Italy

Hello,

on 27 February 1945 the Spitfire Mk IX PT543, belonging to the 185 Sqdn, 8 SAAF Wing, was shot down by Flak in North Italy. Does anyone have information about the pilot and the mission?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Carlo

Hi Carlo

Is this the right date ? I have a book on 185 Sqn and there is nothing for the 27 Feb 45.

All that I could find was 185 - hit by flak and abandoned near Vignola 4.9.44.
This was in PA100-RZ999
While Spitfire the History by Morgan & Shacklady has -
PT543 - 6MU 23-8-44, 82MU 1-9, Q Park 13-9, Casa 23-9 FTR ops 27-2-45.

So two different dates ? if it was at sea on the 13-9 then could not have been abandoned over Italy on the 4th before it got to Italy ??

Hi David and Alex,
thank you for the replies. You are correct: the Spitfire Mk IX PT 543 was abandoned near Vignola (North Italy) on 4-9-1944. I have found the info in internet:

PT543
LFIX

CBAF
M66
6MU 23-8-44 82MU 1-9-44 Queens Park 13-9-44 Casablanca 23-9-44 185S Hit by flak and abandoned nr Vignola [4-9-44] 27-2-45

and I have considered the wrong date.
It is possible to know the name of the pilot downed near Vignola on 4-9-1944?

Carlo
