I would say that codes on the upper wing like this were an exception rather than the rule... but I have most certainly seen other types with codes like this before...

Hello,

After a look at my photos, I can say many planes from this unit and in this perioid, 1940-41, like Ar 68, Fw 44, He 45 Etc... had their Stkz on the top of the wing too...

Yes, it's a Ju W 34.
Another airplane of the same unit, with very close Stkz. was sold on eBay:
