Oblt. Hans Schaefer / 7/NJG2

Hello,
Wondering if there is any info on Oblt. Hans Schaefer, pilot with 7/NJG2. Specifically claims on night of 16/17 June 1944.
One claim was my uncle and rest of crew on a Halifax - LK801 with 434 squadron. Uncle was only one not to survive the shoot down. 4 of crew became POW's however 2 evaded.
Initially I was to believe Oblt. Erich Lippert was nightfighter pilot responsible, however in past couple weeks I received new information, now just following up with lead.
A photo and some biographical information would be great. Also created this web site for 434 squadron and uncle.

Thanks, Alan

I found no trace of his two first kills

The man also appears in Michael Balss book on nachjagd losses:

During the night of 21-22/1/1944, Lt Hans Schäfer and his crew ( Uffz. Heinz Manter and Ogefr. Karl Gliebmann) of 7./NJG 2 all bailed out wounded from their Ju 88 C-6 WNr 750994 R4 + AR after an air battle. Location unknown.

He apparently survived the war with a score of 14 victories.

Hi Alan,

Re: Oblt. Hans Schaefer / 7/NJG2

Lilsis, Laurent, & Rod,
Thanks for the quick replies, a few questions...
Location of victory: Is this reference to crash location or the combat encounter?

Ort: HN8 - 20 km. O Amiens? 20 Kms Northeast of Amiens? The Halifax crashed in the community of Ruurlo, this would put these co-ordinates very close?

Are the following beacons or landmarks?
Bemerkungen: Ausflug
Bemerkungen: Quakenbrück. 1 Abschuss b. Kurfurst

I do have the KE report which can be veiwed on the 434 website...
http://www.rcaf434squadron.com/crash...sh-site/877072

Hopefully there will be a day that I could obtain a photo of the Ju88 crew, any idea how to find out if these fellows are still alive?

Thanks again, Alan

Rod,

I think you made a mistake with "Amiens"....HN8 is definetely eastern Holland and not France.

John,
Right you are, I think Arnhem would be correct?

Thanks, Alan

Re: Oblt. Hans Schaefer / 7/NJG2

Hi John and Alan,

thank you for correcting my error. A re-check of the document confirms that 'O Arnheim' is correct.

Alan, attached is a map showing where Planquadrat HN8 is (note - '8' is the middle square, bottom row within HN).

'O Arnheim' is short for 'Ost Arnheim', or 'East of Arnhem'. If the claim location is correct, then it seems that Schäfer is probably your man...

'Ausflug' (I believe) means that the claimed aircraft was on it's outward flight, as opposed to the homeward flight.

'Quakenbrück. 1 Abschuss b. Kurfurst', this probably means that Quakenbrück was the perceived target, and '1 victory by Kurfurst', or '1 victory near radio beacon Kurfurst'

Cheers

Rod

Re: Oblt. Hans Schaefer / 7/NJG2

Hi Rod,
Thanks for the reference descriptions.
Reading through Loss of A/C reports the crew definetly dropped their bomb load at Sterkrade.
I have spoke to the Mike Laffin (pilot) in past numerous times, and he did state once they were hit the a/c made a 180 degree uncontrolled turn (stbd engines on fire, feathered and shut down) and were headed back to Germany. The Ju-88 did make a second attack, but this was when majority of crew had bailed out, only Laffin and my Uncle were left on board.
In all probability it sounds as though Oblt. Schaefer is the pilot responsible.
Any idea how far Oblt. Eric Lippert's claim was from Schaefer's location?

Alan

Re: Oblt. Hans Schaefer / 7/NJG2

Hi Alan,

a check of the claims listed in "Nachtjagd War Diaries Volume 2" shows that Lippert made his claim near radio beacon Kurfuerst, which would be near Kleve. Another two pilots claimed in the same area. Unfortunately, these claim locations are not precise enough to comment more...

Cheers

Rod
