new find of a Ju 52 near the island of Kea

New find of a Ju 52 near the island of Kea

by the group Dimitris Galon and friends

http://keadive.gr/2009/05...E%AD%CF%81%CE%B1-3-day-3/

(at the end of the link in english).

Dimitris called me and spoke about the excellent condition of the plane.
Unfortunately there is no possibility to make out the Werk-Nr. or the code letters, they are not visible any more.

They found some para helmets inside, some boots, the mashine gun is there (i think a MG 15 7,92), the radio transmitter as well. No skeletons.

I`m asking,

Who knows anything about a touch down of a Ju 52 with paras on the sea near the island of Kea ?

Could that have been occured in spring 1941 or during the attack against Leros 1943 ? I don`t have any info of a loss near there at all.

Is there anything else on the plane that could help in order to identify it ?

Where exactly were the plates with the werk number? They found one on the front of the co-pilot seat. Were they engraved or overpainted?

This view shows the general location of the main ID plate on a Ju 52. It's riveted to the lower left side of the fuselage in the area denoted in red in the drawing.

Re: new find of a Ju 52 near the island of Kea

Hello Stephen and thanks for the apropriate answer.
We found it, in deed, exactly at the mentioned location but unfortunately the salt water destroyed the numbers and the letters. Is there any other possibility to identify the airplain?

Thanks in advance you may also find some new photos of the interrior under

@ Byron
Thanks Byron as always you did great job.!!!!!

Dimitri,

Give us a picture of the para helmets the soldiers left behind (if they are still in the plane ).

Can you take a better photo of the MG ?

Re: new find of a Ju 52 near the island of Kea

How interesting to "visit" this airplane all these years later. Thank you for the pictures.

If the legibility of main plate is so compromised, it's doubtful you will see the W.Nr. on any others. Beyond the damaging effects of long term underwater exposure, although there were many plates on each aircraft, relatively few listed the W.Nr. One other possibility, there was likely a small triangular crash plate made of steel somewhere on the rear of the airframe, possibly internally, marked with the W.Nr. However, I am not sure of the exact location on a Ju 52. Given the conditions you are dealing with, it's a "needle in a haystack"! For what it's worth, the Bf 109 had its crash plate outside the fuselage near the tail; the Fw 190 had its on a spar inside the vertical stabilizer; and I believe it was placed near the tail wheel assembly, perhaps even on the wheel hub, on a Ju 88. So I'd first look around the tail wheel if accessible.

Maybe a close examination of the vertical stabilizer will offer remains of a painted W.Nr.

Good luck,
Steve

P.S. Can you show a picture of the remains of the main plate?

Re: new find of a Ju 52 near the island of Kea

I got the information, the transporter Ju 52 had the W.Nr. 6590, Code unknown, belonged to I./Transportgeschwader 4, Staffel and crew unknown.

Bellylanded at 06.09.43 on Sea near the island of Kea (Aegean sea), one of the crew missed, the rest rescued by Seenotstaffel 7.

can anyone tell more about crew names, code, Staffel etc. ?
