maestro was there (?)
@maestro: you was there?
I'm sure you are mixing up different cases ... The He-177 is in 160+ meters ... and there was never any official attempt by swiss authorities ... Take a look again on the sonar ... you will see the difference - ![]() Regards |

Re: Bodensee He177
Hi Maestro
Thanks for your post. Yes I was aware of the PBY2 in Lk Washington, it is well documented. The shot I saw in 'Jet & Prop' was different to that in the Flugzeug magazine, however I no longer have it to scan ![]() I stood on the shore of Constance and it certainly is a large body of water, so as you say there is certainly hope that there are a few decent wrecks remaining that may one day break the surface. I did hear a Panzer III was recovered a few years ago, and several Fw 190 canopies were salvaged near the shore some years back. Interested to hear more about such possibilities if you can shed any light on the subject. regards Dave |

As for the Fw 58 Weihe, it is a very difficult case indeed. The metallic skeleton is in rather good condition, but the fabric, still extraordinarily extent and in an amazing conservation state, would be ruined at once if you lift the plane from its 108 meters deep location below the wawes of the Lac du Bourget. As an archaeologist, I would personnally advise against any attempt of lifting the plane without having prepared a full preservation program, which as you can imagine is more then cost intensive... And I'm making a true sacrifice as I'm living only 30 miles away from the wreck, here in Geneva... Here to appreciate the amazing state of this unique "Leukoplast bomber" the following link: http://www.watalibi.com/FW58.htm http://www.watalibi.com/FW58photo1.htm http://www.watalibi.com/FW58photo2.htm As for the He 177, Im also very curious to know more about this elusive wreck Cheers Marc |

Re: Bodensee He177
Just think - if the Allies had just had the presence of forethought in 1945 to save 12 to 15 of each and every type of German aircraft built between 1930 and 1945, we wouldn't have all of these expensive and difficult salvage problems today that entail sending a couple of guys down 111 meters into waters that register near -0- !!

Re: Bodensee He177
As far as smuggling booze goes, in 1945 the Australian ace Clive Caldwell (then a Group Captain ran a very sophisticated operation out of Darwin to Morotai in the South West Pacific.

Re: Bodensee He177
A friend of mine had one of the Fw190 canopies. The shape was remarkable considering the time it spent under water. Alas, I have lost contact with him a few years back when I moved. He was also building a Me262 in his underground garage. Some parts were original, some where remanufactured out of wood, fibreglass etc. Danny
