What kind of plane could it have been?
Anyone here who could say what kind of airplane this must have been?
I'm reseaching crashes in my village and this picture was given to me by a local citizen. Thanx, Ray |

Re: What kind of plane could it have been?
Twin row radial engine, three bladed prop with wide metal blades. Could be anything, but possibly late in the war, based on the prop blade.

Re: What kind of plane could it have been?
If possible, a place and date might narrow the search.

Re: What kind of plane could it have been?
The only thing I see that might narrow down the possibilities is the rounded cut-out on the cowling in the bottom left corner of the photo. There is also a distinctive shape to the cut-out section along the top edge of the cowling, but I suspect that might have been the work of souvenir hunters with a knife.
Perhaps someone can confirm what prop it is? Regards, Bruce

Re: What kind of plane could it have been?
Hello
Seems to be a Pratt & Whitney R2800 engine... maybe from a P-47? Was it a single or twin-engined aircraft? Best luck ClinA-78 |

Re: What kind of plane could it have been?
Hello all,
I agree with ClinA-78 as I do have a cylinder of a Pratt and Whitney and it looks like pretty much the same as those visible on the picture. Especially the location of the bolts at the base of the (torn away) valve covers. Apart from that it seems to be a four bladed proplellor... Best regards, Hans Nauta |

Re: What kind of plane could it have been?
Good evening xraymmx !
This looks very much as a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, installed in a P-47. All the best ! Horst Weber |

Re: What kind of plane could it have been?
Almost certainly P-47. For additional confirmation, I had substantial lumps of one here just recently and the prop hub and cowling parts are identical.
