Yes, he didn't die in actual combat, but he was on what I think over here was termed War Service (ie a member of the armed services at a time of war).

Source: www.airforcehistoryindex.org Interestingly, this B-24 loss is included on http://harringtonmuseum.org.uk/Aircr...Operations.pdf (go to page 345) that has a/c lost on special duties, but gives no details other "lost over North Sea". 42-49399 is listed as missing over the Atlantic and there appears to be MACR 9460 for this case (see e.g. aviationarchaeology.com).
