Torrazzo

Gentlemen,

a question for our Italian experts: I would like to know the exact location of the airstrip that was known as Torrazzo in Sicily. It was apparently one of a group of auxiliary airfields in the area between Catania and Gerbini and I have found references where it was listed as " Gerbini 6 ".

So: where exactly was this airfield ? And what is the correct spelling - Torrazzo with one "r" or with two "rr" ?

Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Jochen Prien

Re: Torrazzo

Mr. Prien,

I'm italian, but not that expert... anyway, as you wrote, the airstrip was in the Piana di Catania. Gerbini n.6 was probably an Allied classification, because the Italians call it simply with its name: Torrazza.
It was, on June 1943, reserved for the planes of X° CAT.

The actual location is: 37° 24’ N - 15° 1’ E and the correct spelling is: Torrazza.

Hope that helps

Re: Torrazzo

Dear Manlio,

many thanks. It is interesting to see that throughout the German records the name of the place is always spelt with an "o" at the end.

Kind regards

Re: Torrazzo

Manlio,

volevo chiederti se sai dirmi anche tutti gli altri campi del complesso di Gerbini con i relativi identificativi alleati (satelliti).

Intanto grazie per le notizie su Torrazza

Re: Torrazzo

Dear AngeloP,

I don’t have any informations about sicilian airfilds or airstrip from Allied sources. Anyway, if you’re interested, I remember a couple of discussions, in italiano, here:

Re: Torrazzo

The Italian Air Force 1940-1943", Hikoki Pubblications, Gran Bretagna 1998

Lo conosci e cosa ne pensi?

Grazie
