Re: Bf.109E shot down 19 may 1940 by Carey of 3 Squadron
Bruce/Andy,
Rob's source for this is the Western Campaign part of the Heinrich Weiss manuscript, to which he's had access as a member of the EOE Working Group. Regards, |

Larry
I will dig out my transcripts of the 43 Sqn ORB to check. There appears to be nothing in Frank Carey's Log Book, though. |

Re: Bf.109E shot down 19 may 1940 by Carey of 3 Squadron
I can confirm nothing at all in Frank Carey's Log Book for this day. To clarify that statement; he didn't fly that day.
I suspect there has been some confusion with 19 July 1940. |

Re: Bf.109E shot down 19 may 1940 by Carey of 3 Squadron
I am sure you are correct Andy, however Mias was shot down on 19th June, but by who/what.
The only Hurricane units operating over France at this time would have been possibly 32, 56, 79, 111, 145, 151, 245 & 601 Squadrons but I have no claims for any of these on 19th June. Is it likely that Mias was shot down by a French fighter? verdict still awaited Bruce Lander |

Re: Bf.109E shot down 19 may 1940 by Carey of 3 Squadron
Just to clarify the position regarding Carey and 19 June 1940.
There is certainly nothing in the 43 ORB to support (a) Carey actually flying with 43 Squadron on 19 June (b) any action by 43 Sqn on 19 June or (c) Carey actually having re-joined by 19 June. Further, the ORB states: "After the patrols of 7 June the Squadron strength in pilots was so depleted as to render it too weak for operations; it was accordingly placed on a training basis from 8 June and its intensive training of new pilots was undertaken. The squadron resumed its place in the line on 21 June as an operational unit by day and night" Despite the foregoing, one op by 43 Sqn was flown over France on 16 June as detailed in one of my previous posts. There is nothing in Carey's log book for 19 June. In view of the above it is clear that the "claims" supposedly made by Carey on 19 June are a complete red herring. |

Re: Bf.109E shot down 19 may 1940 by Carey of 3 Squadron
Andy,
Thanks for your further clarification regards the spurious claims by CAREY on 19 June 1940 as recorded by Foreman and repeated by yours truly - I have amended my records accordingly. It just goes to show that you shouldn't believe all that you read in books. Whatever really happened to MIAS remains open to question. |
