Re: luftwaffe runway amd approach lights

See for information about runways and lighting systems in the Luftwaffe, Bundesarchiv RL 23/98.
A night picture of the Deelen lighting system, see appendix picture 1.
The second and third picture show parts of the lighting system of Deelen as can be seen in the Deelen museum.
The second picture is a lightcover from the runway lighting.
In the right undercorner of the picture you can see a ceramic stone with a reflective layer.
It's located in the centre of the taxi-track. The function of the third light is not 100% clear but most probably a boundary light.
You can see them in the field around the three runways.
In "Vliegvelden in oorlogstijd" page 89 you can see an Underground report about Deelen's llighting system from March 8th, 1944.

Re: luftwaffe runway amd approach lights

Thanks Jaap! Fantastic information and the 1st jpg is just what I wanted as well. Now the "Fliegerhorst Venlo-Herongen Inleiding" link I mentioned above is pretty clear for Venlo so I am sort of assuming the sets of approach lights are more or less similar distances; unless you have more detailed Deelen information?
Thanks again.

James

Re: luftwaffe runway amd approach lights

James,

I have made a scan of the Resistance report in "Vliegvelden in oorlogstijd".
See appendix.

Many thanks! It will help me learn Dutch! (Thank goodness for Google!) Looks exactly what I needed.

Hi,
You will see the exact same pattern at Grove and the 1'st jpg looks to me like a construct since the correct colors are missing.

The runway lights at Aalb-West and a page from the German manual, with the correct colors.

Re: luftwaffe runway amd approach lights

Thanks SES, all great stuff! In addition I can practice some German now as well; although similar and technical words close to English! All of this pretty much fills in a lot of gaps in my knowledge.

Re: luftwaffe runway amd approach lights

Hi Jaap. Does "Vliegvelden in oorlogstijd". give any information on the distances from the runways for Ho.Bu , Ho.Bi., and L.F.?

Re: luftwaffe runway amd approach lights

Hi James,
I'm slightly dismayed. In post # 8 I sent you this link:
http://www.gyges.dk/fliegerhorst_grove9.htm
which has this sub-link:
http://www.gyges.dk/fliegerhorst_grove9a.htm
but you keep asking questions, that to me indicated that you did not study those pages.
Kind regards
SES
