Re: Bf 109 loss due to 94 RAF 1/6/44
Hi David.
Thanks for your responce. That was real good info. The chap that lead 213 Sqn was a friend of my Father ie Spencer Whiting who sadly died last year. The gunner that was in the last Baltimore in the rear vic was Allan Harper, who shot at the 109.A real nice story about that in our new book on 15 SAAF which will be out about end of the year. It is possible that the JG27 records are out by a day but I will write that the 109 was believed to have been shot down but not confirmed. Is it possible that you can email me that 213 sqn ORB to stefaan@surgeon.co.za, as I would like to have it as reference when I state that it was a 213 Sqn Spit that came to their help and not 94 as was stated by the 15 Sqn WDairy. A friend of mine has just released a book on the life of one of the pilots of 16 sqn that was leading the raid ie J Clements. Thanks again Stefaan

In the UK National Archives... Signals Intelligence from about December 1944 onward: try the ORB of 276 Wing and its Appendices (AIR26/380, 381 & 382) ULTRA: the DEFE3 series (which files depend on which dates you're interested in. Remember that the dates on the files are when the messages were decoded, not when they were sent. Delays could be anything from 12 hours to a few weeks. Usually within about 24 hours though). Also the various HW series files from Government Code & Cipher School. I'm pretty new to these but HW5 looks promising and HW1 has copies of the messages that were drawn to Churchill's attention each day. The index is pretty good for these. The AIR51 series also has sigint stuff but assembled a bit haphazardly on to microfilm, so it's a case of going through the NA catalogue |
