Re: 16 SFTS RAF Newton

Hello Col,
From Henk's list , he had 2-9-43 for DL676, Sgt/Cadet(P) Waydowicz.
Odd about the date, W8693 continued in service well after the ground collision

Also to confirm death,

Re: 16 SFTS RAF Newton

Hello Col,
Can you help ?
In the Krzystka's link I gave there is a reference to "318/N".

RAF (?) – Master – pochowany na cment. w Newark (318/N).

I have looked and found that Harvard II FT318 served with this training unit. I thought that it could have been the a/c that Waydowicz was involved with have been this Harvard ? But the Harvard File has FT318 with the unit from September '44.
So "318/N" is a reference to something else ?
Alex

Re: 16 SFTS RAF Newton

Alex,

"318/N", is Sgt Waydowicz's grave number in Newark Cemetery.

Re: 16 SFTS RAF Newton

Hello Col,
As I understood it this was a ground accident so not a "crash" ?
In which case would it have warented an entry into the ORB ?
Or just an entry into an appendix ?

Col is correct. W8450 was a night time accident where poor Mroczek (no doubt lost) unluckily hit a tree when trying to force land at Coppice Road, Arnold, Notts.

Gregor

Yes the compiler of 16 SFTS no doubt suffered (as so many others) from fingertrouble and wrote W8540 (which was a black out serial and did not exist) instead of W8450.

Just a few finer points on the above. Oxford I ED236 was on the charge of the Empire Central Flying School at Hullavington, not the Central Flying School, Upavon. The Oxford hit a wall on a BABS approach to Castle Combe, Wiltshire. S/Ldr William JEFFERIES RAF, should read; 100542 S/L (Flying Instructor) William Peter JEFFERIES RAFVR. The SAAF fatality should read; P102652V Major Pieter Jooste HAYDEN-THOMAS AFC, SAAF.

Re: 16 SFTS RAF Newton

Thanks Col,
In my earlier post.
I did list ED236 as ECFS.
