I listened to the interview and have downloaded the transcript. It gives lots of interesting personal detail but I wish he talked more about his contemporaries in the USN and especially those in VS-41 and VF-42. best regards Keith |

Yes, a 36-plane squadron would have three 12-plane flights, the flight leads being the C.O., X.O. and Flight Officer.
One other point concerns OTU VF-1. This was formed at Cecil Field in October 1942 using personnel from the VF section of the Advanced Carrier Training Group at Norfolk, so McCuskey may have started off with the latter. The OTU moved to Green Cove Springs in March 1943.
