Re: General question re. Flugbuch

Hi Tim,
I do no think it makes a difference. Reserve or active duty, all good flying time to log.

Hi Bill,
Well this is interesting! Could he be a Kriegsberichterstatter? (War time correspondent)

Regards,
Norbert

Re: General question re. Flugbuch

Norbert,
I was beginning to think along similar lines. Would a war correspondent have identifiying insignia relating to his occupation, I wonder?

Regards,
Bill N

Re: General question re. Flugbuch

Hi Bill

There was a Kriegsberichter cuff band but I am not sure when it was worn.

Two other printing offices of "Flugbücher":
1.) Rudolf Voigt, Salzwedel
2.) Fliegerhorst - Druckerei, Berlin - Gatow 2

Re: General question re. Flugbuch

Hi all

Firstly thank you to everyone for contributions to the discussion on the mystery man with no aircrew qualification badge. Particular thanks to Bill Norman for bringing the challenge to the forum here!

If I can summarise the reasons for the confusion:

Werner Petersen is variously described in records (e.g. a loss report when he was shot down and survived and the Ehrenliste for the Pokal) as 'Bordmechaniker' and 'Bordschütze'. However, in photos from 1941 (as Unteroffizier - attached) and 1943 (as Feldwebel - attached) he wears no air crew qualification badge.

His Soldbuch lists all awards but no mention of a qualification badge (attached).

Petersen flew over 200 missions and was awarded Bomber Clasps up to and including the Bomber Clasp with '200' Hanger (image of 200 mission attached - Petersen is wearing the Feldwebel 'wings' on the right of the image). His Pokal certificate refers to him as 'Kampfflieger'.

He flew with bomber units from 1940 to 1943 then moved to mine-clearance with 'Mausi' units until 1945.

He was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold in 1942.

…so why no qualification badge?

I will post pages from his Flugbuch next.

Any insight will be very welcome.
