Ed
I would say that all photos showing aircraft that you located belong to the pre-WW 2 section Cheers Stig |

eBay: German intrest - Movdment of EdWest2 Posting
Monday morning USA Central Time. This reader is dismayed and badly disappointed at the movement of EdWest2's initial posting on ca. 25 August of about a dozen superb eBay.de photo offerings. These photos were almost exclusively high quality images of 1930s vintage German aircraft in civil registrations.[
My concern is the derangement of Ed West and TOCH'a long-ime practice of placing such images in the "German Interest" section. That is where they properly belong. Here's why: (1) German aircraft of the 1930s often served with the Luftwaffe past 1939 and into the war. Thus many prewar types should also be considered as authentic W.W. II equipment belonging under "German Interest." (2) All of us know that there was a large "black Luftwaffe" operating prewar types long before 1939. These aircraft bore civil registrations and were intentionally indistinguishable from "real" civilian aircraft. (3) I am deeply involved in identifying and catloging German aircraft registrations, SKZs, and codes. This large class of nformation properly extends on many aircraft types from the 1930s until 1945. The movement of EdWest's posting referred to above responded to a superficial logic that prewar types belong under a "prewar" heading. [b]Understandable but utterly destructive to TOCH's traditional photo posting policy. The images in question should have remained as Ed West initially posted them. Those in our community who welcome Ed West's photos under German Interest" know that that is where they should look for their images of interest. As a result of the movement of the above images, much valuable research data in the photos was lost. I hope that Ed West can recover at least some of it. The registrations hat I saw were new to me; now they appear to be lost. I do not want to hurt any feelings here, but I'm obliged to speak up. Leave Ed West alone and allow him to follow his raditional excellent judgment about where to place the photos he finds. They have been, and are, a priceless treasure for study of ALL of the Luftwaffe's history. Relevant photo findings should remain under "German Interest," because that interest cuts across the 1930s as well as the 1940s. Rabe Anton |

Re: eBay: German intrest
Hello Rabe,
I was able to recover the missing photos plus I was able to add a few. I was torn about where to divide the wartime and pre-war photos. My knowledge of some pre-war types is limited. I decided to break them into two groups based on markings and whether or not a swastika appeared on the tail. You are right, these are high quality photos that should not be lost, but thanks to so-called "modern" technology, unlike a paper record, hitting the wrong button means all is lost or needs to be recovered. Best regards, Ed West |

Rabe Anton
I hate to start WW 3 on TOCH, but with your reasoning, we don't need a Pre-war section at all, at least not when it comes to Germany and the 1930s. Where do you actually draw the line? A Lufthansa Ju 52 clearly civil but requisitioned by the Luftwaffe during the war? Another Lufthansa Ju 52 which crashed before the war? Not me to decide how to arrange the stuff. Its up to the Moderators.... Cheers Stig |

Re: eBay: German intrest
Hi Stig, hi Ed West!
I have not intention of starting "W.W. 3," to use Stig's words. Quite the contrary. I fully agree with Stig's most recent posting. Let's have one category titled, as now , "German Interest." This heading would cover photos of German subjects before 1945. A World War I and an "After War" catrgory would be okay, but let's leave photos om the years ca. 1933 to 1945 under one heading. This would keep things simple and permit readers to identify and select according to their needs and individual choice, and there would be no worry or wonderment about where to find both German civilian and Luftwaffe subjects (ONE PLACE). Stig and Ed, thank you for your generous help and comments. Would the above work easily for you guys? |

Re: eBay: German intrest
Speaking as the only moderator currently on duty, I saw Stig's suggestion to move the list but decided to leave it where it was.
The pre-war aviation section is there to be used however and if (say) somebody found a single album purely of Condor Legion photos then that would seem like the best place for it but I wouldn't usually start splitting up a variegated set of finds such as Ed often presents for us. By the way, I don’t think my admin privileges extend to creating new forum sections. Last edited by Nick Beale; 29th August 2023 at 20:29. Reason: Afterthought |
