Re: eBAy: Captured german planes

Gents,

The three photographs of the Me 262 A-1a in post #5257 (above) is WNr.501221 “Yellow 3” of 3./JG 7. It was shot down by US anti-aircraft fire from guns of the 559th Flight Defense Battalion - 559th AAA (AW) Btn. near Klötze/Kusey, Germany on 21 April 1945. It is missing the top half of the fin having been removed as a souvenir as it is visible in a number of other photos taken soon after the crash.

The machine made a forced landing and hit a railway embankment ripping off the nose and two Jumo 003 motors. The machine was spun around and the centripetal force ejected the pilot from the cockpit who was killed. He was buried in his black leather flying suit by local inhabitants (specific churchyard unknown) and remains unidentified to this day.

Best,

David

#5282 is a well-known US Army shot of the scrapyard at Bonn-Hangelar which you can download free from Fold3.com.

A list of the aircraft found (with identifications where I was able to make them) is here: http://www.ghostbombers.com/sf/Stuka/v8kd_8.html

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes

Jim,

I went through my photos to see the variations in JG 7's III. Gruppe markings. As you note, confirmed III./JG 7 aircraft have the vertical bar positioned on the boundary between the blue/red JG 7 tailband. There are variations between the 9. and 11. Staffeln, but none are positioned at the span between the tail assembly and rear fuselage.

Gruppenstab
111???, Green 1+I, Black Double Chevron +I, Stab III./JG 7, Sinner, Parchim (short, black w/ white outline)

9. Staffel
11????, White 7+I, 9./JG 7, unknown (short, white)
111832, White?+I, 9./JG 7, pos. Brandenburg-Briest (short, black w/ white outline)
500???, White 13+I, 9./JG 7, pos. Leipheim (long, white)
500071, White 3+I, 9./JG 7, Mutke, Debensdorf (short, white)

11. Staffel
110007, Yellow 5+I, 11./JG 7, Schlöppler, AirMin 79, Fassberg (short, black w/ white outline)
500491, Yellow 7+I, 11./G 7, Muller, Dennis-Ginny H-888-FE-111, Lechfeld (short, yellow w/ black outline)

Therefore, the subject machine "Yellow 3" WNr.501221 is a 3. Staffel machine. Note also the similarity with the well-photographed "Yellow 8", WNr.112385 also of 3. Staffel that was found at Stendal. The style, size and dimensions of its '8' is identical to that of WNr.501221's '3'.

Best,

David

9. Staffel
11????, White 7+I, 9./JG 7, unknown (short, white)
111832, White?+I, 9./JG 7, pos. Brandenburg-Briest (short, black w/ white outline)

David, do you have a firm confirmation on 111832. I have no record of it. although it is in a good block. Thanks!

David
I assume you refer to WNr 111007?
When was the connection to AM 79 discovered? So far in every publication I have AM 79 is unknown,
not even certain to have actually been a Me 262.
I know Dan speculates in his book it may have become either AM 78 or 79 but as far as I know
both AM 78 and 79 are untraced in British files.
Cheers
Stig
