Re: Which stories behind these photos?

Hi,

Another and different photo of this Blenheim R3662 has been previously published by ebay. The caption of this WV-T given Dunkerque. A/C was belly-landed on the beach.

P9317 is certainly the serial of the SD-A.

Salut Bertrand & all,

Correct, it is P9317 of the 222 Sqn. I attach another picture with s/n.
It should be the same machine in fornt of what F/L Bader was photographed in May 1940. See Darkar´s BoB.

Re: Which stories behind these photos?

Concerning BB236, four of the crew were killed: Sgt EH Tytherleigh, F/O JH Carrick RCAF, F/O GM Gillies RCAF, and Sgt NR Jones RAAF.

Sgt EW Parr (pilot), Sgt GE Swift and Sgt J Cunningham were taken POW and from the photos it seems the pilot had a lucky escape as those other poor men shown in the wreckage were probably those grouped in the forward fuselage - ie Flight Engineer, Observer, Bomber Aimer, Wireless Op.

Re: Which stories behind these photos?

Hi All,
Currently on e bay, a wellington,
I can't make out if the a/c has an ASV ( or remains of ) aerial under the port wing.
Anyone with more knowledge or better eyesight...
Cheers
Jerry

Re: Which stories behind these photos?

I have looked at the enlarged version and I do not think this Wellington has ASV especially as aircraft that carried the early 1.5 metre wavelength ASV had four mast aerials on the top of the rear fuselage. There is no trace of these.

It is in typical Bomber Command colours of 1941 and although Mk 1C were converted to GR Mk VIII equipped with ASV in the Middle East I think this is a standard bomber version.

I think the photo has been taken in the desert of a Wellington abandoned on an airstrip that's been captured by the Axis and that the bits hanging down are damage.
