Hs126 shot down 18 July 1940
Hi guys
I understand that a Hs126 of 2(H)21 was badly damaged by Hurricanes over the Channel on 18 July 1940 and that it eventually crashed at/near St Sabine. Both crew were wounded/injured. This loss does not appear in THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN THEN & NOW (1st edition). Is it in a later edition? Can anyone provide identities of the crew etc. Cheers Brian |

Re: Hs126 shot down 18 July 1940
I have only one Hs 126 lost by this unit in July 1940. It crashed on takeoff and the date was the 12th.
Misidentified by the British? Ragrds, Norbert |

Re: Hs126 shot down 18 July 1940
Apparently 111 Sqn claimed to have damaged a Hs 126 at 1550 hrs on this date...........?

Re: Hs126 shot down 18 July 1940
Quite so Chris.
Brian, Accepting claims to represent actual losses - surely that way lies madness ? Your Hs126 does not feature in BoBT&N because no such loss was recorded in the relevant German records - as confirmed by Norbert. PS Sunny Bury most convivial yesterday after a visit to the Nutshell & lunch at the Cafe Rouge. We must meet up again soon. |

Re: Hs126 shot down 18 July 1940
In an article on Hs 126's in Avions magazine it shows a Hs 126 of 2.(H)/21 as engaged by two Hurricanes of 111 Sqd. on this date . There is no percentage damage recorded and ''Deax aviateurs blesses'' so perhaps an optimistic claim ?

Re: Hs126 shot down 18 July 1940
The only casualties recorded by 2.(H)/21 that entire month took place on July 12, 1940, as confirmed by Norbert. This was a take-off accident at St Sabine and not on an operational flight. It is included in the QMG Returns for July 25 issued on July 27. Pilot, Fw Gerhard STOECKEL, and 1. Wart, Uffz Heinz KRAUSE, were both badly injured.

Re: Hs126 shot down 18 July 1940
Hi Peter
You wouldn't wish to be in Bury St Edmunds today - not without a rubber dinghy, that is. The heavens have opened. I wasn't trying to make anything of the 111 Squadron claim - it's just that Mason (OK, I know he's not reliable) does show that the 2(H)/21 Hs126 crashed on 18 JULY. Only endeavouring to obtain the facts! Yes, we must meet soon! Cheers Brian |

I stumbled over the name Gerhard Stoeckel and apparently he's my grandpa who died in 1995... i know he got in two serious crashes during the war and I think I do remember him mentioning a take-off incident... As I know little about his pilot activities in WWII I'd like to trace a bit his path (especially east-front) but don't know where to start... @ Peter: what is the QMG returns? Is the 2.(H)/21 the unit? Does one have access to "Stammrollen" from specific WWII-units over inet ? I know I'm not quite contributing to your topic with these questions, but I'm at least glad my grandpas name popped up at once somewhere ;-) Jan Stoeckel |
