Liberator V/86 Squadron - HM Submarine Sunfish

On 27 July 1944 Liberator V/86 attacked and sank the Russian submarine V-1 (Ex HMS Sunfish) mistaking it for a U-boat as the submarine was on passage to Russia after refitting at Rosyth.

I'm looking for the serial number of the Liberator and if possible crew details.

Any help appreciated

Regards
Peter

Re: Liberator V/86 Squadron - HM Submarine Sunfish

hello,

Here are some details that are on the uboat.net website.

"Transferred to Soviet Navy on 10 April 1944, commissioned on 26 June 1944 as V-1.
Bombed in error by a RAF Coastal Command Liberator off Norway, during passage from Dundee to Murmansk on 27 July 1944. V-1 (Capt. 2nd Class Fisanovic) was not in her assigned area and she was diving when the aircraft came in sight instead of staying on the surface and firing recognition signals as instructed. All crew including the British liaison staff were lost."

Are you seeking the names of the British liason staff on board ?

B.1 (Russian), submarine
RAVENSDALE, Sidney, Petty Officer Telegraphist, D/J 87505, (Ambrose, O/P), MPK

From another great website naval-history.net

Hope this is a small help.
Alex

Re: Liberator V/86 Squadron - HM Submarine Sunfish

Thanks Alex,

I have most of what you have posted including the Air Staff Operations Summary and details from the Admiralty War Diary which covers this incident, its the details of the aircraft involved I'm after.

I started to research this incident some 20 years ago and thought it was about time I concluded my work.

Once again many thanks

Regards
Peter.
