The Luftwaffe collection at the French ECPA-D

Hello,

Does anyone know approximately (or exactly) how many albums there are of the Luftwaffe collection at the ECPA-D. My recollection is that it was about 175, but I may be confused and there are more. Does anyone know?

Thanx,

Not numbers of albums but 350 000 photos.

It is difficult to know exactly the number of prints of LW, because you must check all the albums taken by PK in DAA, DAT, DAM, DAK etc

Re: The Luftwaffe collection at the French ECPA-D

Bertrand,

I was thinking of the rows of bound volumes all on about 3 or 4 shelves that I started working through during a visit last fall. Are there more collections than just that one? A trip is being planned and I'm trying to figure out how much time to schedule. I got through about the first 18 or so volumes of the collection that I'm talking about in three days for just the 1939-40 period of my project, and I'm trying to figure out where to go from here. I also have to cover the SHAA on this trip, as well. What are these other collections that you're talking about?

Thanks,

Re: The Luftwaffe collection at the French ECPA-D

The problem are not the number of photographs already printed and available, but the sheer amount of negatives still to be archived and printed. There are no precise data, but the amount of the German images still to be catalogued and seen has been calculated by several French researchers to be much greater than those already available.

The work on these negatives is still underway (at least I've been told so) and one or two albums are added each year to the collection, but this is apparently a task which has no precedence over the normal routine and maybe it will take (at the present pace) years and years to go through all the German WW2 photographic material preserved by the ECPA.

I've been a few times at the ECPA in the past and cannot but feel sorry for the wonderful things that are still laying in some of their "caves" and which will probably see the light only to be seen by some other generations...

Not so many actually, according to the curator. About 80-90% are currently on public display.
