Yes, the schwarzen Männer are generally neglected. If you're interested in learning more about their contribution, find a copy of this book:
"Schlachtfeld Luftfahrzeug: Der Einsatz der schwarzen Männer im II. Weltkrieg" by Harald Vogt
Flugzeug Publikations, 1994, ISBN: 3-927132-21-7, 208 pages, German text
The back cover states that the author "would like to pay tribute to the many unknown aircraft maintenance workers and mechanics who fought an almost invisible war against losses, damage, and lack of replacement parts."

The book covers the organization, training, tasks and daily routine of the ground crews. It also contains personal accounts, sample documents, manuals, and many B/W photos. (About 40% of the content is text, the rest is pictorial.)

Excellent book, and the only one that I'm aware of on this subject.

Hope that helps,
Leon Venter

Yes, I believe it is the only one, and we should be very thankful to have it. I spent a lot of time searching for others but never found any. Unfortunately, IMO, it's more of a personal memoir than an attempt to set down the organizational and historical record of the several thousand units and tens of thousands of Luftwaffe personnel, both male and female, who kept the aircraft serviced, repaired and flying. The only type of unit the author, Harald Vogt, details to any extent is the FBK because that's the type he served with and knows something about.

Below is an incomplete list of the various Luftwaffe unit types in the aircraft servicing and repair category. Many of these types consisted of more than 100 units in the 1942-44 period, while a few were highly specialized and only numbered a half-dozen or a dozen units. Many of the personnel in these units were schooled in the Flieger-Technische-Schulen and the Flieger-Waffenschulen for two and three years before being sent to some of these units. It's a fascinating subject to some of us.
