German ship SINFRA sunk 19/20 October 1943 by ??

Hi guys

Slightly confused!

On 19/20 October 1943, the German freighter Sinfra (ex-Vichy), carrying Italian POWs, was sunk by air attack off Crete. In excess of 2,000 lives were lost.

Most accounts I've seen state that B-25Gs and Beaufighters combined to sink the vessel, while Roy Nesbit in 'Armed Rovers' says she was torpedoed by two Wellingtons of 38 Squadron.

Can anyone enlighten me, please?

Cheers
Brian

For what is is worth, the book "War in the Aegean" by Smith and Walker on page 162, has a very detailed description of the attack as carried out by Wellingtons from 38 Squadron. The page is available on Google Books.

Thanks

I have that book! Yes, I should have checked first. I could do with a PA!

Brian, I would expect the answer to be in Weekly Intelligence Summary number 213, 214 or 215 within AIR 22/79.

Hope all is well,
Bruce
