26.11.1944 Loss details sought!

Hi,

Does anyone have any Me 262 loss information in their archives? I am searching for the loss details for Oblt. Heinz Lehmann who was killed in action I believe in a Me 262 on the 26th November 1944. Clarification of his loss would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Melvin

For what it's worth, Axel Urbanke's book "Green Hearts" says that Ltn. Schreiber Ltn. Schreiber of Kdo. Nowotny was killed in an accident in 110372, White 3, near Lechfeld on 26.11.44.

Re: 26.11.1944 Loss details sought!

Summary of information about the crash of Uffz. Horst Sanio and Oblt Heinz Lehmann at November, 26th, 1944.

Personal communication with Jan Horn, May 2005.
Im Tagebuch von Lt. Haeffner, 2./KG 51, fand ich:.
26.11.44 ..."Wir starteten in 5 Schwärmen . Angriffsziele waren Artilleriestellungen bei Roermond, Deurne und Helmond." .... "Leider fehlte von Oblt. Lehmann und Uffz. Sanio [Me 262 A-2 (170 120)], die im dritten Schwarm geflogen waren, jede Nachricht."

PRO Air 29/1118 ORB 1309 Mobile Wing RAF Regiment.
Time 0915. Three Me.62’s dropped 4 HEs approx two miles NE of airfield, no damage or casualties to airfield personnel. 2875 Sqdn guns opened fire on one of these aircraft flying 2000’NE. 32 rounds were fired, one hit was claimed, the plane was last seen loosing height with smoke pouring from it, traveling NE.

Remark Jaap Woortman.
1309 Wing and 2875 Sqn. were located at Helmond (Neth.) airfield B.86 which was under construction at this date.

Personal communication withDeutsche Dienststelle, October 5th, 2005

Investigation at the crash site by Karl Lusink, July 2006.
Uffz Horst Sanio crashed at 26 november 1944 with his Me 262 in front of the farm of H.Wentink, Stuwdijk 5 Vorden (Neth.), 1 km NNO of “De Wildenborch” castle.
Sanio was severely wounded, transported to the farm and collected by the Germans.
The time of the crash was about 10 o’clock. (It was just before church-time).

Remark Jaap Woortman.
Although there was no difference between British and German time at November 26th, 1944 there is a difference in timing between the Dutch eyewitnesses and the WASt information. The German time of the crash was the time Sanio was collected at the farm by a German ambulance. During investigation of the crashsite parts of the jet engine have been found.

Personal communication withDeutsche Dienststelle, October 5th, 2005
Bestattet wurde er zunächst auf dem Heldenfriedhof Almelo, Reihe 16, Grabnummer 1, im Jahre 1949 erfolgte seine Umbettung auf den Friedhof in Ysselsteyn, Feld BE, Reihe IV, Grabnummer 79.

The wingman of Sanio, according to John Foremann in his Me 262 Combat Diary at page 70 and 208, Oblt Heinz Lehmann of I./KG 51 was killed when his Me 262 crashed 3 km south of Kirchwistedt (Germany) at the same day. Reason unknown. Oblt Heinz Lehmann has been buried at Stade, Garnisons-Fdh Reihe 1, Grab 23.

This information was collected by me during a research program for our study about the history of the Dutch airfields during WWII. This study has been published in November 2009 by Boom, Amsterdam.

Re: 26.11.1944 Loss details sought!

In the first ULTRA item attached below you can just see the date "24/12" on the left side. This means that the aircraft and pilot are mentioned in a signal on that date, for some reason it was talking about an event a month earlier.

A report two days after the pair went missing gives the month as October (somebody's typing error, I guess).

Many thanks to all for contributions, I think Jaap's research got us there in the end! I have attached a photo of Lehmann's grave and crash site courtesy of Dietrich Alsdorf.

Best wishes to all.
