Glasgow Raid 19 July 1940
Would anyone be able to tell me which unit the two Dornier 17s involved in this small raid belonged to and if possible which airfield they were based at?
Many Thanks Keith McC |

Re: Glasgow Raid 19 July 1940
Bit far north for standard Do 17 bomber units-th believe that the only unit that was based up north was a recce unit namely 1/120 based at Stavanger but it is unusual for 2 aircraft to carry out such an attack

Hi,
they were Ju 88s of I./KG30, which were sent to make harrassing attacks. Do you have the time of this raid? Regards Robert |

Re: Glasgow Raid 19 July 1940
What I have read is that they attacked Glasgow at 10.13am on 19 July 1940 and caused damage in the Blawarthill and Govan districts killing four and injuring 24. 21 were made homeless when a tenement block collapsed.
I am new to all this and this is from one source. I did look up Bases for them - is it possible they attacked from Aalborg West? It seems a long way to go for two aircraft to make a harassing attack. |

Re: Glasgow Raid 19 July 1940
Is there anything in Les Taylor's "Luftwaffe Over Scotland: A History of German Air Attacks on Scotland, 1939-45"? It's quite a while since I read it but it was quite good on documenting all kinds of relatively small attacks.

This is where I got the information from including the Dornier's. I was just trying to get confirmation as I don't like to just repeat what I have read without checking it out (if I can!) Keith |
