Re: Looking for losses of I/St.G. 2 March 1943

I have a few St.G. 5 losses for those days, but nothing for I./St.G.2. You may have the St.G. 5 losses, but those reported were (and the locations for 16-Mar seem to match the location) -

Ju 87R-2, 5667, Grützmacher, Uffz. Erich, , I., 2., St.G. 5, , , , , 16-Mar-43, WIA due to enemy fighters., , Lfl.1/Eins.Osten, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #9)-Vol.15, , Tscherentschizy-Onufrijewo, 20%, F, , ,
Ju 87R-4, 6265, n.n., , I., 2., St.G. 5, , , , , 16-Mar-43, Enemy fighters., , Lfl.1/Eins.Osten, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #9)-Vol.15, , Tscherentschizy-Onufrijewo, 20%, F, , , Weser Flugzeugbau GmbH
Ju 87D-3, 1212, n.n., , I., 1., St.G. 5, , , , , 17-Mar-43, Notlandung, probably due to engine trouble. Bf injured., , Lfl.1/Eins.Osten, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #9)-Vol.15, , nordwestlich Schimsk, 50%, F, Bf Uffz. Gerhard Wachsmuth, ,
Ju 87D-3, 1216, n.n., , I., 1., St.G. 5, , , , , 17-Mar-43, Notlandung, probably due to engine trouble., , Lfl.1/Eins.Osten, Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #9)-Vol.15, , Fl.Pl. Gorodjetz, 50%, F, , ,

Re: Looking for losses of I/St.G. 2 March 1943

Thanks Jim, the ones for the 16th seem to match the locations Onufrievo - Cherenchitsy located in the 35 Ost/ 18192 and 1841 on the map. 20% is far cry from being shot down.

There were reported by 1 IAK on the 15th a total of 14 air battles so there is probably some more claims there that didn't show up on the lists of Soviet aces.

Re: Looking for losses of I/St.G. 2 March 1943

Posted to soon. On the 15th the 1 IAK claimed 3 Ju 87, 1 Hs 126 and 15 Fw 190 shot down. Damaged 1 Bf 109 and 1 Fw 190. Just don't know who the pilots are right now but interested in the Ju 87 and Hs 126 units. I believe there was only one Fw 190 from I./JG 54 in a dogfight and none from I./JG 26. II./JG 54 had a Bf 109 G-2 damaged in a Feindflug so that kind of matches the damaged.

Re: Looking for losses of I/St.G. 2 March 1943

Thanks Jim. The Hs 126 on the 16 Mar 43 at Chudovo is near Leningrad. Here is a extract from the 1 IAK report for the 15 Mar 1943 south of Lake Ilmen.
(?) - 09:07 3 Yak-1 from 875 IAP led by St. Serzhant Gus'kov was covering the crossing at the Lovat' River in the region of Kobylkino. Levedev shot down a Hs 126 in the Shelgunovo - Konovalovo region. St. S-t. Gus'kov - 2 Ju 87, one fell 5 km north of Cherenchitsy, the second left burning to the west.

S-t. Sergey Pavlovich Lebedev of the 875 IAP would later that day go MIA on a Yak-7B.

Re: Looking for losses of I/St.G. 2 March 1943

Can anyone advise if I./St.G 5 had any losses to Soviet fighters to the south of Staraya Russa and west of Demyansk on the 05 Mar 1943? Also any unit that might have lost a Ju 88 to the west Staraya Russa on this day to fighter attack.

I'm sure that I. and II./JG 54 along with I./ and 7./JG 26 were performing escort. So I'm looking for the units that they were covering. I./JG 26 had the only fighters lost on that day so I have that covered.

This is the only I./St.G. 5 loss to enemy action I have for March 1943:

23 Mar 43: 1.St. Ju 87D-3 shot down by a fighter SW of Krasnibor (not located, but in Leningrad Front area), 100%, 1 KIA and 1 WIA.

Re: Looking for losses of I/St.G. 2 March 1943

Thank you Larry, I'll keep that one set aside for when I get to that day. The Location on the map is Krasny Bor which is NW of Ul'yanovka.

The Soviet unit that made the claims on the 05 Mar 1943 were the La-5 equipped 169 IAP with Kapt. Grigoriy Ivanovich Zaporozhchenko claiming a Ju 87 (5) and Podpolk. Andrey Andreevich Fedotov claiming a Ju 87 (7) at Kuliki and Goluzino which is south of Staraya Russa. Ml.Lt. Fedor Makarovich Mazurin from 28 GIAP flying a Airacobra claimed a Ju 88 (3) west of Staraya Russa.

Are the Luftwaffe loss records showing gaps during this time period or maybe just overclaiming as there were far more German fighters claimed then actually lost.
