Ju88 w/nr.2170 KG77 crash 11-12/11/1940
Hi,
During the night 11-12 November 1940 Junkers Ju88A-1 WNr.2170 of KG77 is reported to have crashed during the landing at Deurne/Antwerp airport. Is any additional information about this crash and the crew of this plane available ? Many thanks in advance. Best regards from Belgium Luc |

Re: Ju88 w/nr.2170 KG77 crash 11-12/11/1940
I have it as 25% damaged. No cause listed in the information I have. I also show that it was later modified to A-5 standard. Perhaps one of the JU 88 experts has some better info.

Luc,
Here is what we hold in the EoE LW Loss list: "11 November 1940: I./KG77 Junkers Ju88A-5 (2170). Crash-landed at Antwerp-Deurne during sortie, cause not stated. No crew casualties. Aircraft 3Z+AL 25% damaged but repairable." Hope this helps. Do you have photos of this incident? |

3Z+AL ? I have that one on the same date, but as WNr.3255. The crew parachuted near Marktbreit/Mein after running out of fuel, Beobachter Fw. Emil Gröhling injured.
But I could be wrong. GRM |

GRM,
Only Peter Cornwell, who maintains the EoE LW DB, can clear this up. Hope he will jump in here. |

Could it be both?

GRM is correct and there is clearly a duplication error here. The source for these codes was Jim Perry's listing. But does anybody have the original origin of this information?

Re: Ju88 w/nr.2170 KG77 crash 11-12/11/1940
088 2170 was Ju 88 A-5 3Z+AL but at its loss 09 ~ 10 April 1941.
Code "A" found on wreckage, seems confirm so. It was Ju 88 A-1 earlier, but no code given for 25% damage incident 11.11.1940 and no crew injured either. Personal note here (not an personal attack!): Thinking any particular Ju 88 (in Bob or Blitz, or Russian campaign etc, or war period) kept its code for long time is totally wrong. Frequent examples are of planes changing codes very often. Planes very frequently changed their individual Gruppen codes and were "loaned" (or transferred) all over the Geschwader. Even cases of code carried for one single day are known. 088 3255, do not know of source for code. My list is blank. But was actually not "100%" on 11.11.40, despite GQM say so, and no code given in NVM (Salonen). It later was three engined "Ju 88/3m" ;-) i.e. one BMW jet engine added for flight testing but that is just another story. Last edited by edNorth; 16th February 2015 at 23:52. Reason: forgot mention A-1 vs A-5 error in EOE listings. |

Original source for WNr. 2170 is "Gen.Qu.6.Abt. (mfm #2)-Vol.3". I have the code as '3Z+AL?' based on this thread.
As for WNr. 3255, same source, but also Foreman, BoB:The Forgotten Months, p.78. The author specifically lists the '3Z+AL' code for this machine. |
