Me109 WNr. 784956

Hello Friends,

I'm looking for any information regarding Me109 WNr. 784956.
It is a Regensburg built Me109 G-14/AS and I think it belonged to III./JG 6.

Any additional information or confirmation of the above would be great!

Many thanks,
Matthias

Now my question....why the interest? I am still working on a JG 6 history and if you have any special information I would love to hear it.

Thanks,

John

Re: Me109 WNr. 784956

Hello John,

In 2005 a gun cover of a Me 109 for the engine mounted gun was found in a crater at Obertraubling near Regensburg. The crater was dug up during construction work.
On this cover was the hand written WNr. 784956 clearly visible.
So it seems, that this particluar aircraft was transfered to Messerschmitt Obertraubling, after its belly landing in January 1945, for repair.
Probably it was destroyed there during the attacks on the airfield in early 1945 and came to a rest in the crater.
In this crater also the complete tail section of a Me 262 and a Kettenkrad were found.

Cheers,
Matthias

Re: Me109 WNr. 784956

Hello Matthias,

Many thanks, the a/c was only damaged 5% so it seems to me that it was needed to get it to Obertraubling, but you never know.....do any pictures of the cover exist?

Thanks,

John

Re: Me109 WNr. 784956

This is the cover, as it was found in the crater.
The Werknummer is clearly visible. Also the placards about the handling of the motor.

Cheers,
Matthias

Re: Me109 WNr. 784956

Matthias,

My apologies for the late reply, but many tahnks for the picture. I still doubt it a little if this a/c 784956 was moved to Obertraubling after its bellylanding at Cottbus a/f. The RL2-III-766/61 lists the a/c with 15% Bruch but the KTB Lfl. 6 lists it with 5% Bruch.

Regards,

John
