Re: VX101

A cropped version of this photo appears in Kecav 'Captured Me109s' by Jacek Jackiewicz and Miroslaw Wawrzynski and is identified as a Bf109G-6/trop Yellow 14 of 6./JG53 which was captured at Comiso airfield on Sicily on July 13, 1943. RAF crewmen with No. 3201 Servicing Commando Unit inspected Yellow 14 and it was determined to be completely intact. Yellow 14 was later shipped to RAF Collyweston and arrived on February 4, 1944. It received the code VX101; the underwing cannon pods and dust filter were removed during testing. VX101 was damaged during a landing accident on September 26, 1944 and afterwards used for spare parts.

Re: VX101

Yes Kutsha, nice try,

But from "War prizes", Phil Butler, Midland counties publications the story is completely different.
Unit unknown, WNr.unknown, damaged on 19 May 1944.
..
So? I expect more if possible; I mean beyond any doubts.
Thanks Kutscha.

BR, Franck.

Re: VX101

I don't know, if the facts represented here are beyond any doubt, but Kutscha's story can be backed up from here
http://www.luftwaffe-research-group....overview.2164/
and here
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/568720259172927170/

LRG starts from Phil Butler's War Prizes, which were/ are on VX101 without specific (unknown, unknown...) entries. "http://www.ukserials.com/" confirms some dates and the fate, but not the original identity and the base this a/c was found.

Re: VX101

Hello Christian,

Thanks for LRG Link ... As moderator (super?) you know my position ...

Anyway...
I know this and this is my problem.
What the source for this, if others don't know?
What's the source for 15720?
"Captured Luftwaffe" in Neil's blog gives "captured in North Africa"....

Regards, Franck.

Re: VX101

Hello Franck,

yes, I do know, your position on certain things. Anyhow...

The info was provided by Neil (aka FalkeEins) -> see the pintrest link.

At Falcon's (David Weiss) Messerschmidt Bf 109 Hangar, there is a photo of VX101 (Photo ID: 7066) with a second photo (Photo ID: 5431) attached to the file, showing Bf109G-6/R-6/Trop., WNr.15270, StKz RP+DT, yellow 14 of 6./JG53 in original camo at Cosimo AF, just after capture by RAF. Falcon is requesting verification of this a/c (yellow 14, WNr.15270) for being the so far unidentified RAF VX101.

Maybe I should have stated, that this is a hetherto most likely candidate for the identity of VX101. ...just to be clear.

Re: VX101

Yes Christian,

We are, David and I, more or less on same track. You know how it is with internet ... After a while an original source can be lost then comments are taken for good; and if the original source is wrong, or not complete, worst is the situation.
Indeed, it's a good - at least not impossible - candidate ... But why? Just because we know British got it at Comiso?
How many G-6s they got in good state at Comiso?.. At least Three- I see a fourth though - and all from JG53.. So, why this one?

BR, Franck.

Re: VX101

Franck,
I have no problem revealing my sources. After all, without the sources all this would just be a speculation/ rumor/ hear say at the very best. You are actually very right in insisting to prove and verify a given statement. This also prevents (unnecessary, IMO) discussions about truth or plausibility thereof. Last, it (revealing the sources) shows that statements are properly credited.

IMO, it is this one of the three or four found and known to have been at Cosimo AF at the time of britsh capture,
a. because it matches the story to the most and
b. it is the only one documented (that I know of).

Re: VX101

Well,

All in all just an educated guess; to make short. Thanks.
