Seeking info on Oblt. Georg "Murr" Schott (JG-1)
Hi guys,
I have been commissioned to do a painting depicting Schott's (Staffelkapitan of 1./JG 1) last combat flight, on 27 Sept 1943. I will show him in his FW-190A-6 "White 11", with a wingman as they engage B-17s on the way to Emden. Schott was downed on this mission, and eventually died in his dinghy after an intensive rescue effort failed to locate him before his body was found (in the dinghy) on a beach a while later. Luckily, White 11 is well documented. Tom Tullis did a stunning profile of this plane, and I have the Cutting Edge decal sheet on order as well. I also have Eric Mombeek's hardback 1992 JG-1 history on the way (I've always loved the 190, especially with the stripes and checks of I/JG 1, so there will be several companion paintings to come also - justifying the expense!). I also have the Classic Publications 3-volume set on JG-1 by Mombeek also, which I take to be an 'elaboration/update' on his earlier hardback book. Does anyone have any more information to add other about this particular engagment of Schott's (or his plane) other than what I've outlined above, much of which is taken from this site: http://www.luftwaffe.cz/schott.html . . . and what's found in the short blurb in Mombeek's 1943 volume II on JG-1? As an aside, if Schott was shot down as a result of action with P-47s, there's a good chance the 4 FG (Willard Millikan, possibly - he got a 190 on that mission to Emden) had something to do with it, but I haven't gotten that far in comparing/cross-referencing the 4 FG Encounter Reports I have with times/locations. Other fighter groups shared the escort duties with the 4th that day as well, but it would be fun to try and narrow down his victor to one or two P-47 pilots - unless a bomber got him. Any further help appreciated. Wade (chicoartist--at--yahoo.com)
