Insignia and markings (2)
Early RNAS insignia 1914-15.
.......................................... Dyott Monoplane No.1598 (50hp Gnome). Red ring ordered Dec. 1914. Often outlined in white even on light surfaces; from an Operational Order "They can be distinguished by a large ring painted in red under each wing, and also Union Jacks". The flags (on fuselage and under wings) were not always applied on new aeroplanes. Nieuport 2-seater 3163 or 3169 (maybe 3163 with 1 Wing) with rudder cocarde ( French style on aeroplanes from the French). Though ordered for the RFC in Dec. it was marked on the rudder by both services, officially in reversed colours by the RFC. "All aeroplanes of the RFC to be marked on the underside and on the rudder with concentric circles similar to those on French machines but with the colours reversed, that is with a red circle inside and a blue ring". Existing wing flags could be retained. Bristol Scout with 2 Wing on Imbros with red ring as ordered, with narrow outline; Nieuport on left still with rudder cocarde ( in French colours). Evidently there was a mixture of styles at this time in 1915. Some BEs had cocardes on the tailplanes. Nick Last edited by Buckeye30; 12th June 2020 at 15:07. |
