Spitfire-sortie east of Remagen in Dec. 1944 possible!?

Dear all,

on December, 27th 1944 an eye-witness observed an air-raid on a freight-train, which was parked nearby the little train-station of FEHL-RITZHAUSEN. This location is 34 Miles (54 km) east of Remagen and approximatly in the middle between Siegen in the North and Limburg at the river Lahn in the South.

Acc. to the eye-witness, who was a youngster and familiar with the aircraft-types, a bunch of SPITFIRES (or Tempest ?)strafed the train several times. He is absolutely certain about SPITFIRES, he even mentioned that he could see the english cockades. He also stated that the freight-train had a Flak-rail car in the front- and rear-section.

Both parties were firing like crazy, but neither a fighter was damaged, nor the train suffered major damages.
I would appreciate any hint, who could help to bring light into this event.

Thx, TCO
