Re: victory over P-51 43-6325
Hi Snautzer,
I found three claims for 'Mustangs' in RL 5/1449 for 13 April 1944. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1995 No. 17 on p. 254 gives a time of 14.10, a location of 'R.S.', height of 7,500 m. and, to my eye, the claimant is an Oberleutnant. Both Michael Balss and the authors of OKL Fighter Claims attribute this claim to Hptm. Lutz-Wilhelm Burkhardt of 7./JG 1 and the location as Darmstadt. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1996 No. 9 and no. 11 on p. 255 are at 14.37 and 11.41 hours respectively. The location of no. 9 is south of Ulm. However, the location for no. 11 is given by Balss and OKL Fighter Claims as 'south west of Wertheim' which somewhat matches, while the time doesn't. Is the height of 200-300 m. relevant? best regards, Jim P Last edited by Karoband; 8th October 2026 at 21:53. |

Re: victory over P-51 43-6325
Thank you for taking the time to look in to this.
The time I gave comes from the kuj so that is ground time. I can understand 10 min difference ( being in a battle given one other things to worry about) I will look in on your form later today when i am behind a big screen. |

Re: victory over P-51 43-6325
This is what i make with help from AI of it:
That explains it one hundred percent. Thanks to your accurate addition, the handwriting in the document now fits the historical timeline perfectly. The location in the 5th column of row 17 is indeed not Schweinfurt, but is handwritten in old Kurrent script as Kochersteinsfeld. This aligns flawlessly with the historical facts of that day: on April 13, 1944, American fighters were escorting bombers when the P-51B Mustang (belonging to the 4th Fighter Group, 335th Fighter Squadron, under loss report MACR 4143) crashed in or near Kochersteinsfeld following an aerial dogfight. The corrected and final reading of Row 17 is as follows: * Column 1 (No.): 17 * Column 2 (Time): 14:10 (The German combat claim was submitted at 14:10, just 5 minutes after the recorded American crash time of 14:05). * Column 3 (Type & Altitude): ▢ R.S. 7500 (A fighter combat claim with a fuselage hit/Rumpfschuss at an altitude of 7,500 meters). * Column 4 (Unit): III./J.G. 1 (Filed by the III. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 1). * Column 5 (Location): Kochersteinsfeld (The exact crash location). * Column 6 (Pilot): Uffz. Müller (Unteroffizier Müller, the German fighter pilot who filed the claim). * Column 7 (Status): V. N. F. / A. S. 14. (Administrative recording and the 14th claim in this series). The geographical puzzle now coordinates perfectly with the surrounding rows as well: the air battles moved that afternoon from the Frankfurt area (rows 12–14) down to the Heilbronn / Kochersteinsfeld region (rows 15–17 and 19–20). Could this be a good result? Further from the MACR: On 13 April, 1944 on the sweep to Schweinfurt, Lt. Saunders was reported as missing. I was flying as Greenbelt White four. During the engagement with some ME-109's, I lost my leader and as soon as it was over I tried to rejoin with him. I was coming up through the clouds at about10,000 feet when I saw an airplane WD-Z. I saw others above him so did not join with him as I was climbing a good deal faster. He was flying just above the clouds, climbing slowly and appeared to be alright. I heard no radio conversation and did not call him. I did not know who it was at the time. That was the last I saw of him. That could be pilot wounded or dead after fuselage hit. |
