Mystery Me 109?

The 331 (N) Sqn ORB of 6 August 1944 refer to a mysterious Me 109.

"1 M.E. 109 was observed in the target area with roundel on fuselage. Red centre with white edge and a black cross in the centre."

Is this a Bulgarian or Slovak aircraft or...?

Re: Mystery Me 109?

I wouldn't put too much credit on combat report statements on markings and camouflage, as cited above. Another well-known Norwegian pilot claimed the destruction of a Fw 190 with Italian markings!

The heat and fast pace of combat make such observations dubious at best.

You would be surprised with the ammount of details reported by Raymond Lallemant on his St Valentine's Day combat!
I am rather wondering what the pilot actually saw and what could have caused such an impression to him.

Re: Mystery Me 109?

Franek,
I appriciate your point, that we need to disinguish between reporting and impressionism.

But then the question arise: what may this pilot have seen over Holland in August 1944 that bring him to report this? I just thought that it might have been a Slovak 109, but I would not have a clue as to such aircrafts being in the area

Does not make much sence at all!

Re: Mystery Me 109?

You report what you see, and what you see is just an impression of actual object. Just do a sketch of the purpoted markings and then think, what could have done similar effect. I cannot see slovak cross in this respect.
BTW Why Holland?

Re: Mystery Me 109?

Holland might be my mistake, but I translate Z.3257 into qZ3257 and use the grid converter that I was led to in another thread. This leads to a point on the coast West of Hoorn in Holland.

But I have to admit that now you ask I doubled checked and the 100 Lancasters rather sound like the Bois-de-Cassan mission. This does not correspond with the Z.3257, though. This coordinate is given in the 331 ORB as well as the 332 ORB.

There were several claims for heavy bombers at Pointoise area by III/JG26 and III/JG54. I suppose this was the very mission.
