Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst
Log book of Bf Uffz Ernst Weiss shows that in three flights in Feb.1944 his pilot was Gen.Oberst Alfred Keller (b.19-9-1882) flying He111 VC+XP. The Luftwaffe historian Oberst.Ltn. Hasso von Wedel age 47 was shot on 15-9-40 crashlanding his Bf109 and taken POW. Was not Keith Park flying himself around in a Hurricane in the BoB age 48, and I think Bomber Command Losses for 1940 had the operational loss of a crewman in his mid fifties. Brig.Gen. Frederick Castle USAAF (age 36) was lost on 24-12-1944 flying with the 487th B.G.

Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst
Buried in Noyers-Pont-Maugis. So he was probably killed in the Ardennes during the retreat???
Pretty far from Paris, France is a little bigger country than Belgium, maybe killed in pARIS area in "grabbed" in Ardennes... Remi |

Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst
Brian, von Wedel was an old friend of my uncle, from their time together at JG3 during the Battle. My uncle was making claims at the age of 44, having flown combat in 1917-18 as well. Of course this was not unheard of in the Luftwaffe, less common in Allied air forces. The name Stanley Vincent comes to mind.

Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst
Hi VtwinVince, From what I remember reading Stanley Vincent was the oldest RAF pilot in the BoB. The account I read of von Wedel said he was repatriated back to Germany but died in the fall of Berlin in unknown circumstances. Your Uncle sounds like he had quite a flying career having flown in both World Wars,

Re: flugbuch from lw-oberst
Just to come back to Oberst Adalbert Lieb. It seems that very littel exist on him. I have only found him in the Luftwaffenrangliste from 1945. Promoted to Oberst 01. april 1942. Deceased 28 august 1944.
Perhaps Larry can trow some light into this. Junker |
